Sitting on the hard.
How did we get here?
Day 15
Cleaned the decks, and started rearranging the interior to move back to North Carolina. The headsails were put below. We struck the main and mizzen. This is hard work: they're heavy.
The mizzen can be rolled on deck. It's big, but manageable.
The main, however, can't be rolled on deck. The flakes need to be about 3′ wide and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this on the foredeck. We got the main rolled, and took it ashore where we could make wide flakes, and then roll it.
I changed the oil in the engine.
We visited Greg of Kopelia to see a refit in process.
Day 16
We thought we might be hauled out Monday. We weren't. George of Indefatigable brought a ladder we could use. We also took us to Enterprise Car Rental at the airport. We rented a big SUV to take our stuff from here to Charleston where our truck, Seeker, is parked.
Once we had the car, we could start moving things from the dock to the rental car. We'd rather wrestle heavy stuff onto the dock. Carrying things down the ladder is less fun.
Day 17
We were hauled this morning. The crew were exemplary. We had lowered the mizzen boom to make it easier to put it into the lift. I had queued up these pictures to help them with the slings:
These would show where to place the slings.
Some of the new (back in September) paint flaked off. This suggests where we have problems with the primer and the gelcoat. In places.
We visited Juan of Uhane Kai and looked at the Burnt Store marina.
The checklist is about half done. Tomorrow, we need to finish up two sets of objectives:
-
Getting stuff out of the boat that we'll need in North Carolina. We're constrained by the small SUV and what we can cram in there. Yes, we drove across country in a Toyota Corolla once, but we'd shipped a lot of things by UPS to ourselves.
-
Getting the boat ready for (potentially) heavy weather of hurricane season. The sails are down. We need to wash everything once before jamming it below deck.
