Frankenpillow

The Commodore Says "The underberth storage needs to be accessible."

Red Ranger has a boat-load of storage [snerk]. But some of it is difficult to access without having three arms: one to lift the cushion and two to root around in the compartment.

The saloon settee (or "salon settle couch" in common English) had two too-big [snerk] cushions.

We have relatively few pictures of the settee. In this picture you can—almost—see that the two cushions have a diagonal slash. Under the "for'ard" section there are two storage compartments. Access is made complex by the too-large single cushion.

Solution?

Step 1. Borrow an electric carving knife.

Step 2. Cut the two complex cushions into three "simple" rectangles.

Step 3. Stitch new covers.

Actually. It's more complex than that.

Cutting the two big cushions to make two rectangles is simple. Joining the two triangles into Frankenpillow is somewhat less simple.

The most important part of creating Frankepillow is 3M Super-77. Spray, wait 30 seconds, mush together.

But the real complexity was getting the size right.

The first pass, Frankenpillow I, was clearly too thick. We had assembled foam to be sure that it would be comfy. CA made an entire cover for version 1.0. After all that effort, it didn't match the other two sections.

So. Back to the gluing board. She pruned and adjusted. She peeled off some foam; she trimmed in size and thickness; we glued more foam in other places. Hopefully, Frankenpillow II will match the other two sections of the settee a little better.

The two rectangular pieces look great. The back has a curve and rather complex darts that needs careful fine-tuning.

We're looking forward to being done with the 1970‘s rec-room orange-brown-tan theme. The rich, heavy Cab Sauv (actually "Coral Maroon") color will be nice. Brand-new clean fabric will be nice. Access to storage will be first rate.
